In recent years traditional media has suffered a wave of collateral damage resulting from the resurgence and cruelty of new social media coming from younger generations. The media is now faced with a new type of game where rules do not exist. Since the evolution of social media there has been a historic and unprecedented transition in which news is discovered and presented to the world. Traditional forms of media such as newspapers and television are being exploited by anonymous, independent "hackers" who are able to access highly classified documents and upload them for the world to view. This new phenomenon that the world is experiencing is a trend called “Social Media” where the Internet has become a huge playground for information to be shared with the world within seconds becoming viral. As the Internet has become a highly efficient entity in distributing information globally, this in return creates a fertile ground for highly skilled individuals to hack information and publish it with virtually no hesitation about the possible consequences it might entail. This new wave of transparency has introduced actors like Julian Assange, creator of a website called WikiLeaks. Wikileaks participates in exposing confidential and classified information from various sources and sharing it on its website. Wikileaks was created in 2006 and in one year it checked 1.2 million secret documents. With Assange serving as its ringleader, the organization is made up of Chinese dissidents, mathematicians, journalists and various start-ups. In November 2010, Wikileaks released US State Department diplomatic cables and other leaks involving the US government and other regimes. Acco...... middle of paper....... Society is witnessing a transition to a highly connected world where everything is online. Just because Wikileaks has managed to move forward with the times and preserve information should not make them lose their right to free speech. According to CNN, "US government lawyers may argue that WikiLeaks and Assange jeopardized national security and make their case." (CNN) While WikiLeaks and Assange may harm national security with the information they publish, the First Amendment protects all forms of speech, no matter how serious. WikiLeaks is simply trying to tell the world about various events and political agendas that would be hidden by our government and mainstream media. The future of Wikileaks looks promising and many are opportunistic that Assange will prevail and continue to shock the world by exposing us to the real world we live in.
