Rigidity and comfort (steel stabilizing trusses)The 101-story, 500-meter-tall building, Taipei 101 is located in Taipei, Taiwan. Taipei 101 is the pride and identity of the people of Taiwan. The building represents the “concept of seeking beyond perfection” (Taipei 101 anon 2005) as it outsmarts nature with its technological features. Building 101 achieved a notable world record for tallest building in 2004 with 101 floors, hence the name Taipei 101. Designing and building Building 101 was very challenging and rewarding, as it is located in one of the most hostile in the world. The tall building is located in Taiwan, which is constantly under attack from Mother Nature, seismic potential and typhoon winds are just common problems that architect CY Lee & Partners and structural engineers Thornton Tomasetti Inc needed to solve. The Taipei 101 engineers made the impossible possible (Shieh et al n.d.). The initial plan was to construct three buildings with a 60-story building in the center, but the 60-story building soon transformed into a 101-story single-tower building to meet investor demand. For being the most unique skyscraper in the world, the Taipei 101 building represents its culture (Taipei 101 Binder, 2008). In this part of the essay we will investigate how stiffness and comfort are maintained in the Taipei 101, we will take an in-depth look at some of the features of the Taipei 101 that work together to provide stiffness and comfort. We'll look at stiffness first and then move on to comfort features. How is the rigidity and comfort of the Taipei 101 maintained? To provide comfort, building 101 must confront nature. Taipei 101 is located in a risk-prone environment.
