The most common of which is major depressive disorder. It is characterized by a constantly low mood, sadness and lack of interest in daily activities. Major depression may occur only once in a lifetime or it may occur over a long period of time. Persistent depressive disorder or dysthymia is a chronic depressive mood that lasts at least two years followed by a few days in which everything seems to return to normal. Another type of depression is perinatal depression. This type of depression usually occurs a few weeks before giving birth and a few weeks after giving birth. Symptoms include extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion that would prevent a new mother from caring for herself and her baby (Depression, 2015).
