This poem interested me due to the generic nature of the title. After doing a little research into who Adrienne Rich was, I discovered that she was an influential poet and a feminist. Finding this out opened a new perspective to her eyes on how she felt about women being treated in society. After reading this poem I have a strong feeling that Adrienne Rich is talking more about women's society than about her sisters. Rich talks about his first sister saying that she is a transparent woman and all her nerves are visible. This shows how he is not afraid to show it. Then he explains the second sister, who has a stitch on her heart, and will never heal. I think this has something to do with someone breaking up with her. I believe this because a heart can only be broken when someone it loved is no longer there. Finally, the third sister has torn stockings, but still looks beautiful. This shows that the woman is healing through her broken heart. Since Adrienne Rich was a feminist, it would be more effective to have an audience of people to explain that no one can put a woman down forever and that she will always come back strong. I feel this poem symbolizes how a man can hurt a woman in society in the eyes of
