For most people, ethnicity is demonstrated by values, lifestyles, customs and rituals that are personal to a single ethnic group or religion. The feeling of belonging to a particular group is a fundamental need of humanity. In a sense, ethnicity can be separated into two particular categories, a unique social structure and a cultural heritage passed down from generation to generation. I come from a Mexican family. This showed me the many similarities, as well as differences, between a Mexican family versus an American family. From an early age we are taught that the value of family is the most important thing in the world. Most Americans encourage their children to move after they graduate from high school or college, Mexicans believe their children should live with them until they get married or around age 25-30. The most important member of the Mexican family are the elderly. They are given special treatment and attention. For example, our belief is that older people should not go to nursing homes. They are welcome in the family and are cared for until their last days. Grandchildren are taught to be respectful and always listen to elders, especially if they are your grandparents. Most Mexican families are extremely traditional, with the man as the breadwinner and authority figure. Machismo (masculinity) in all Latin countries is a huge problem, not only because women are deprived of their freedom, but because men abuse their power. I asked five Mexican women what they thought about machismo in Mexico. Two of the five women told me much the same thing; They believe that it is not a bad thing, but it depends on the man. The other three were very against it, and they… they're a paper thing… for Americans, because most Americans plan their lives on a cell phone or in a planner and too often that doesn't happen. do not include their family. Mexican food is influenced by ancient civilization. For example, the Mayans ate corn tortillas with a bean paste covering the tortilla. The Aztecs discovered that by mixing and mashing different types of vegetables you get a tasty appetizer that they call salsa. They also learned to make what are now called tamales. When the Spanish arrived they brought milk, rice, and other new products to Mexico. But now they remained in the kitchen. Mexico has an amazing culture. It is full of wonders and mysteries that have yet to be discussed. Mexico, like any other country, has its downfalls, but one day, just like the United States, it will rise up and become one of the most powerful countries in the world.
