The Kite Runner is a mix of epic and tragedy. I will discuss how the text highlights a hero's journey with the characteristics of a tragedy. To begin with, Foster's article described what traits constituted an epic. He said there are five steps that go along with it. Our police commissioner, a place to go, a stated reason for going there, challenges and trials, and the real reason for going. “The police commissioner is a person who is usually young and experienced, immature and sheltered.” (Foster, 3). A place to go is the place our police commissioners want to go instead of being forced. A stated reason for going is the primary reason they believe is why they want to go somewhere. Challenges and trials are what the police commissioner must face on his journey. They could be scary or dangerous people. But they have to overcome these things to become a hero. Finally, “the real reason for going is always self-knowledge”. (Foster, 3). If a story had all of these elements then it would be considered a hero's journey. Furthermore, Aristotle's article explained what elements a tragedy contained. He states that "tragedy is a form of drama that excites the emotions of pity and fear." (Aristotle, 1). The character cannot be all good or all bad and the audience must be able to connect with him. Aristotle states: “The tragic flaw is having a lot of pride that leads the hero to ignore a divine warning or break a moral law.” (Aristotle, 1). A tragedy is made up of six main parts: plot, character, thought, diction, melody and spectacle. “A tragic plot must be unique and complex.” (Aristotle, 3). The character has many features to meet the requirements. First, “the character has to be good in some way. They must act appropriately for their gender. They have to… middle of the paper… a lot of details in the story before this one. Like when in the seminar we were discussing how Amir's mom said that if you are happy something bad will be taken away from you. He ended up losing his life after Amir was born and this could also relate to how Amir was reading Hassan's letters only to find out that he had been shot and killed. If we hadn't discussed it, I don't think I would have understood it. Before applying the structure I didn't think that Amir was a tragic or epic hero. I don't think I would have ever connected with that. But looking at the definitions I took from Aristotle, Foster and my articles I realize that it is. In conclusion, The Kite Runner is a hybrid between an epic and tragic structure. I found evidence from my articles, Aristotle and Foster that it was a hero's journey with a tragic character, Amir shared both traits throughout the story.
