“He is not culturally 'disadvantaged', but he is culturally 'different'” (Lake 111). This quote in itself demonstrates the argument of this article; it's telling how Wind Wolf has a different culture that affects how they see the world. Culture is something that influences the way we live; the values and opinions one holds depend on culture. Ethnic foods, celebrated traditions, and religions are all examples of aspects influenced by culture. Surrounded by culture every day, a person's family, ethnicity and religion have profound effects on their worldview. Ethnicity plays a fundamental role in culture. It can have many effects on how a person acts within their ethnic group. For example, the climate zone in which a person resides affects his or her ethnicity because it influences his or her way of life. A person who lives in a rural environment has a different lifestyle than someone who lives in a more urban environment, just as a person who lives in a colder climate lives a different lifestyle than someone who lives in a warmer. Depending on where they live, this affects their occupation, the clothes they wear and the way they speak. Another way ethnicity influences culture is through “ethnocentrism.” This concept means that some ethnic groups may believe that their culture is superior to others. Therefore, cultural conflicts develop in which one sees one's own culture as correct and other cultures as wrong or bad. One way that helps people form opinions about the world is family traditions. Without even knowing it, a family will provide knowledge and influence how you see the world. They also help define what is “normal.” In “Marriage with a Real Stranger” it is stated: “...the tradition of arranged marriage, constituted...... middle of paper... I hate Muslim culture because of a wrong stereotype. Another example of religious influence is found in thinking that one's religion is superior to another. This is found in almost all religions; people believe that their religion is better than other religions and believe that they are superior to other people. While one might argue that one's culture does not influence how one sees the world through the experience of Richard Rodriguez abandoning his culture for education, in reality it does because even though he has abandoned part of his culture, it still influenced how he saw the world through some of the things he ended up doing. Another argument that could be made is that everyone is individual and each person is unique. However, this idea is incorrect because a person's individuality constantly changes and is itself influenced by culture.CONCLUSION
