THE POSITIONThe role of Chief Operating Officer (COO)The departments to be brought together under the new position of COO essentially give the new role control of all aspects of operations planning, inbound materials and logistics, pre-production engineering, production, quality, outbound logistics and customer service. Additionally, the role will have a continuous improvement (CI) manager/function that you will report to, in order to internalize/embed CI processes into this part of the business. The new role of Chief Operating Officer reports to the CEO. The interface points between this organizational structure and the rest of the organization are as follows:Sales: regarding the S&OP process, the specification of customer requirements for the product and also the order for the trainer/customer service.Advanced Engineering product: regarding the introduction of new products or substantial changes to existing products as they affect production operations. Finance: Regarding all aspects of Volgren planning/budgeting and reporting of daily operational performance (to enable weekly and monthly operations to perform actual analysis against budget by finance. ) The requirements of the position The nature of the role therefore requires that the holder has the following attributes or skills:  Must be a personnel manager. The role requires achieving goals through people, due to the breadth of its functional scope and managing multiple sites in interstate locations (rather than being in the field and “managing by walking around,” for example). Must include le the full scope of a manufacturing supply chain - don't just be an "Operations" person with a factory focus or, for that matter, a "Logistics" person who doesn't... middle of paper... problem solving , etc. They must demonstrate strong people management skills, in recruitment and performance management, change leadership, etc. Finally this person should be able to demonstrate business management skills; this is essentially a business prospect or nous, which indicates that they will have the ability to provide business leadership to a total company. Ideally, they should demonstrate the ability to qualify, in the short to medium term, to be a contender for the CEO role at Volgren (as it will be at that time). Industry Experience Candidates must be from the manufacturing industry. They should have worked in large-scale companies, so they have sophisticated personal management skills and understanding of the business system. However, they should not have a bureaucratic style or depend on extensive support networks.
