The novel “Looking for Alibrandi” is a realistic portrait of the life of teenagers in contemporary Australia. Author Melina Marchetta has portrayed her teenage characters in ways that engage contemporary Australian teenagers. In this critical response, he will examine different types of relationships of adolescents in this novel, friendship, love relationship and family expectations. The friendship depicted in this novel is a realistic depiction of teenage life in contemporary Australia. . The central character Josie and her friends Sera, Anna and Lee exemplify a realistic friendship. They are very good friends with each other, although there were some small arguments between Josie and Sera due to the different concepts they have, but they still managed to get along quite well. They did some crazy things together; they went to see the lead singer of a famous band at the Sebel Town House during the school's annual marathon, because they thought that lead singer was the coolest guy in the world. This is very realistic with Australian teenagers; teenage girls always love their favorite idol or attractive boys. Their friendship is very reliable and protective. “We tend to mother her a lot, and if we ever find ourselves in a risky situation, like being crushed at a concert or terrorized by students at Cook High, Anna is the first person we try to protect.” (P19) This quote shows that they always try to protect Anna because they know that she is a very nervous person. There are many Australian teenagers who like to hang out with their own friend groups and help their friends if necessary, just like Josie's group in this novel. The love relationship in this novel is realistic compared to that of contemporary Australian teenagers. Josie's relationship with Jacob Coote is a good example. Josie really fell in love with Jacob because he was her first true love. She really enjoyed the time she spent with Jacob. They kissed, hugged, shared their feelings and almost even had sex. Like many teenagers, they often argue with each other during their relationship, due to the totally different cultural backgrounds and totally different views they have towards life. «That's why it will never work between us, Jacob. We live two different lives and you can't understand it. Why can't you understand my life? Things are not as easy as they are for you.
