This story begins when Max Butler was a high school student in a small town called Meridian, located in the heart of Idaho. He didn't fit into the town's cowboy culture as he was very computer literate. He was the protector of his group of friends because he was six feet five inches tall. Max had a habit of getting into trouble during his high school days in Boise, so when his friends found a master key to the school, they decided not to tell him because they feared what he might do with it. He had already had a run-in with the law for phone phreaking while scanning long-distance codes. When he finally recognized the school key on his friend's key ring, the two broke into the high school where they ransacked the interior. Max also found the storage room of chemicals and put them in his car where later that night he lit a fire in one of his friends' yard.
