The author I chose to use to write is Laura Kipnis and her essay: Love's Labors. For this Capstone Essay I chose to write about divorce rates and how they have increased over the years. Divorce can happen in many different ways, each unique in the reason for the interest/motivation to divorce. Kipnis speaks entirely to an audience ripe for divorce; adulterers, fantasists, the side chick/boyfriend or even the suspicious spouse. The reasons for the increase in divorce vary depending on the time period considered or the situation in which the divorce takes place. Due to the increase in divorce rates, it seems that even the states themselves at some point have taken note of the situation and tried to act. They took it upon themselves to try to improve the divorce rate. As? They created something they call “covenant marriage.” It was founded in Dallas, Texas, by Phil and Cindy Waugh, a Baptist minister and his church worker wife, in 1999. Covenant Marriage is a legally distinct type of marriage, in which the married couple agrees to obtain premarital counseling and accept more limited grounds for divorce. This moves more into the past, specifically the “fault divorce” era (before 1969). Covenant marriage is supposed to limit divorce through education and planning. Premarital counseling and those who take the time to educate themselves before getting married are said to be statistically better off when it comes to divorce. At the time of its invention, covenant marriage took off, seeking to be a possible solution to not only help decrease the increase in divorces but possibly eliminate them all together. “However this is only a reaction to the last 50 years of increasing divorce and unmarried births,” says Steven Nock.
