Topic > A look at climate change - 963

“Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacier advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age around 7,000 years ago marking the beginning of the 'modern era of climate era and human civilization' (Jenkins). Whether climate change is real or not has been widely debated among scientists and politicians. In his article “Climate Change is Real,” science and political journalist Chris Mooney concludes that climate change skeptics are influenced by political beliefs and economic interests; Furthermore, science and politics are interconnected because the government provides funds for scientists to continue their research and use their findings to support the political beliefs to which they belong. Bottum and Anderson, in their article “Unchanging Science,” describe climate change as cyclical and say there is no way to prove it. In contrast, Sarah Laskow, in her article, “Debunking Green living: Combating Climate Change Requires Lifestyle Changes, Not Organic Products” argues that climate change is real and to combat this problem, individuals will have to make changes to their lifestyles. The existence of climate change is supported by scientific evidence showing that it has worsened over the last century due to rising sea levels, human expansion of the greenhouse effect and economic interests; therefore, individuals, together with the government, must take measures to prevent further climate change disasters. Scientific evidence provided by the National Climatic Data Center and NASA showing sea level rise strongly confirms that climate change is real; a device known as “Argo Floats” measures rising temperatures and salinity in ocean currents. (Jenkins). According to half of the document, the increase occurred over the past century due to rising sea levels, carbon emissions, human expansion of the greenhouse effect and political pressure. Opponents of climate change face political pressure and try to believe that climate change is a cause of periodicity while hiding the scientific truth behind climate change. However, individuals, together with the government, must take measures to prevent further climate change-related disasters. The government should impose new environmental protection regulations and policies to regulate the reduction of carbon emissions and the greenhouse effect caused by human activities. Specifically, in order to limit carbon emissions and reduce climate change, the government should implement the cap-and-trade environmental policy to reward companies that would use natural resources to generate electricity instead of emission-free fuels (Laskow, 342).
