Genetically Modified Organisms: Health Dangers In recent years, people have become increasingly health conscious about what they eat. However, a new issue of concern is the addition of genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms are organisms whose genes are modified through engineering techniques. GMOs are scientifically modified to kill insects and change the way plants grow or taste. The effects of these mutations are causing serious health problems around the world. Genetically modified organisms harm human health and are continually introduced into the daily diet without authorization. Consuming these genetically modified foods can lead to many health problems. The health risks of genetically modified organisms are too great to allow them to be accessible to people. Immune reactions are part of the side effects triggered by GMOs. Consumers are starting to realize that they are being fed all these chemicals without even realizing it. Melisa D. Smith, a noted nutritionist, health educator, and author, reports that “symptoms related to soy allergies include irritable bowel syndrome, other digestive problems, and skin conditions such as eczema” (2). The most purchased GM crops in the United States are soybeans, corn, canola and cotton. Many of these crops purchased in the markets are contaminated with genes that come from viruses and bacteria. People need to become more informed about what they consume and what they feed their families. Genetically modified organisms are toxic. What do consumers really know about the side effects of GMOs? These organisms have been shown to cause organ damage. There is sufficient evidence that these chemically produced… are half paper… Consumers are aware of the various consequences that arise from consuming these genetically modified organisms. Ultimately, genetically modified organisms pose a health risk and should not be allowed on the markets.
