Topic > The Impact of Greek Philosophy on American Education

The modern world is becoming more complex every day, and it seems that most of what surrounds us is actually the result of various ancient philosophical practices. From the structure and foundation of government to the fine arts we have today, it's all thanks to philosophy, and especially the philosophy of the ancient Greeks. Historical documents show that Greece is the birthplace of philosophical thought, philosophy is said to be the daughter of the wise men of Greece. Ancient Greek philosophers have made many contributions to the modern world, they have a very profound impact on the way people live today, their wisdom has influenced our fine arts, various fields of science, mental and physical education and of politics. Philosophy is an academic discipline that exercises reason and logic in an attempt to understand reality, existence and answer the mysteries of knowledge, life and human nature, it is as old as existence itself, however, Greek philosophy was born in the 6th century BC Greek philosophy was born with the logical thought of one of the founders of Western philosophy and father of the dialectical method, Socrates, and was then elaborated by his student Plato and, in turn, by his disciple Aristotle. Socrates was the first to suggest that when one realizes that one knows nothing, one begins to acquire knowledge; therefore he created a method in which his students are promoted to think independently through the use of questions. Socrates believed that it is the teacher's job to encourage students to bring out ideas on their own, which will eventually lead them to logical and critical thinking, according to him, "A man is a midwife who does not conceive an idea but stimulates it into student's mind... in the middle of the paper...
