Topic > Characteristics of Animals in Man And... by George Martel

Question 8: Humans in our world reflect the animal behavior observed by Pi in many ways. Humans are similar to animals, humans are just a more complex and intelligent species. Martel uses personification with Richard Parker and the other animals instead of humans to show how humans and animals are similar. Unfortunately I believe that humans are often aggressive and have a rough animalistic side. This question is strongly associated with themes, the will to survive, man and the natural world. Out of the will to survive, both animals and humans will do whatever they need to do to survive. The hyena killed the zebra to survive and get food, which I thought was disgusting and sad, and Pi killed fish and turtles to survive. In our world, people hunt to kill and eat. Animals are considered dangerous, but in our world not all are. Some are very gentle and others are dangerous if provoked. This is just like people; there are some very dangerous people in the world, and many people become angry and dangerous if provoked, while some are extremely kind and passive. This leads to the conclusion that there are a wide variety of people just as there are animals, and we should not make broad generalizations about either. Martel compares people to animals and shows that people can also have an animal side and be similar. Pi shows that the lines between the animal and human sides can become blurred over time. Pi becomes more like an animal when he ignores all his moral values. For example, it kills animals. I can relate to Pi, I don't even want to kill any living creature. Richard Parker also symbolizes the dual nature of Pi and represents the animal side of Pi, as he basically represents Pi. The two personalities inside refer to “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, or someone who shows two very distinct personalities. Richard Parker can symbolize the dual nature of Pi, his human and animal sides. Pi sees how animals can have two sides, and each animal is different that we see in our world. The zebra reflects a weaker, more passive person who is constantly picked on by a bully. Orange juice represents a very feminine, thoughtful and polite person and someone who stands up for what they believe in. The hyena represents someone who panics from stress as if stuck in the lifeboat and acts like a bully by taking their anger out on others. . What Pi saw regarding animal behaviors reflects the fact that in our world everyone is very different and no one is the same. Another animal behavior that Pi observed while on the lifeboat that reflects humans in our world is dominance and the need for a social system. Pi had to let Richard Parker know that he was the dominant creature on the lifeboat. Humans also need to have a person with a dominant role over them. In the workplace there are employees and then there is the boss. Workers need a boss who keeps everything under control. Bosses need to let their employees know who is responsible, just like Pi did with Richard Parker using the file
