Critique of Wilson's Book Hurt People Hurt PeopleSummaryWilson's book Hurt People Hurt People is quite interesting, the book is designed to help readers overcome past hurts. Wilson indicates that from the moment we are born we begin to formulate questions to live, in these cases the fundamental questions “Can I be safe? 2) Can I be myself? 3) Can I be accepted”? (Wilson, 2001, p. 73) Throughout our lives these are the questions we will continue to ask ourselves until we leave this world. The first half of the book examines problems a person may have encountered in childhood, such as unavailable parents, shame, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and choices. He began discussing how readers can begin to heal those childhood wounds with the help of counseling and depending on Christ. Wilson explains his “Theory of Change,” he states, “Constantly making and practicing new choices produces change” (Wilson, 2001, p. 87). “New choices plus consistent practice equals change” (Wilson, 2001, 87). It also uses a HOPE chart which helps in the healing process from all childhood wounds. In order for the Charter to be used correctly you need to establish the key issues, then seek the truth about the matter, start making new choices and finally put it into a new practice of living in truth instead of lies and deception. Between each section of his book he has a space where the reader can stop and reflect on what was discussed and pray about the issues that were considered. Encourage the reader to seek help if they are having difficulty with something that has been reviewed. Wilson uses several different charts that pertain to each topic he examines and how a counselor can implement these charts into counseling sessions. Also use... half of the card... ling. I will also do this when I help clients who come to see me for grief counseling. I think it will help to go back to childhood wounds and begin to change the thoughts he or she has about what happened during those years. I feel like this theory will be the one I use when I start counseling because I find it extremely helpful with all the different charts he uses in his book. I really like how he approaches each problem with a prayer to help start the process of overcoming the past. I will also use the Scriptures to point out God's truth as Wilson does in his book. Knowing that hurt people hurt people has actually changed the way I look at and interact with everyone I've come in contact with here recently. References Wilson, D. D. (2001).
