One way that affects patient care is when the interdisciplinary team does not have access to patient records during the allotted time. In that case, the nurse goes back to paper charting with flowcharts and checklists until the system is back up and running. This can be very frustrating and difficult for new nurses who have never worked with paper charts, but it is a challenge that can easily be overcome. Nurses are instrumental in the process of implementing certain systems used in the workplace. Nurses should be allowed to have input and suggestions about what works and what doesn't when dealing with such systems, whether it be the EMR, healthcare organization systems, or even the use of point of care systems (Mitchell, 2011 ). This allows for open collaboration between nurses and information technology to find easy-to-use solutions and applications when needed.
