Anyone who has seen The Vampire Diaries and Twilight has noticed similarities and differences with the main female protagonists, love, supernatural powers and lust for blood. In Vampire Diaries people are introduced to Elena Gilbert, a young outgoing teenager. He has lived in Mystic Falls his entire life, unfortunately his parents are deceased. They died in a road accident while their vehicle sank into a nearby river. Elena had a normal life until it was interrupted by an encounter with Stefan Salvator, a 165-year-old vampire. Unlike Vampire Diaries, Twilight has Bella Swan. She seems like a shy and awkward teenager. Bella moved to Forks, Washington to have a better father-daughter relationship with her father. Both of Bella's parents are divorced and share custody; that's why Bella had to move to Forks. Just as Elena met Stefan, Bella meets Edward Cullen, the charming and intriguing 107-year-old vampire. In both of these vampire-inspired films and television shows, there is one common area. LOVE. The difference between the Elena/Stefan romance and the Edward/Bella romance is that Elena and Stefan are doppelgangers. They are a shadow self "a person who appears to be a supernatural double of a person who lived before them" (The Vampire Diaries Wiki). This is a spell that binds people who look identical to Stefan and Elena to be infatuated with each other. Unfortunately this is not “true love” as some might say. Elena and Stefan's feelings and attraction for each other are not real. Under the Doppelganger's spell Elena and Stefan believe they are compatible with each other, but that's just the lie the spell has cast on them. Once the spell is broken, Elena and Stefan are free to love whoever they want. On the other hand, the love story between Edward and Bella is... halfway... with Edward's boyfriend Bella. Both of these male vampires chose to become vegetarians out of remorse for killing innocent people. Sun, sun. Mr. Golden Sun, please shine on me” (Barney). Both of these groups of vampires agree that the Sun is not their best ally. In Twilight people can see how Edward is never there when Forks has a sunny day. This is what made Bella more curious to find out what was happening to Edward. Together they go to the meadow, and Edward shows Bella why he can't stay out in the sun. Bella sees Edward's skin transform from human flesh into sparkling diamonds. Also The Vampire Diaries has a different approach to the Sun. Surprisingly Stefan and Damon's skin doesn't glow but instead burns. If a vampire remained in the sun for a long period of time, he would die and turn to ash.
