Lessons from Major Barbara, Good Woman of Setzuan and Madwoman of Chaillot Philosophers around the world have reflected on the idea of evil. This raises another extremely essential question: “how should we live?” Since we know that evil exists in our world, does that mean we have to live with the knowledge, accept it, and conform to society's ideal that only the cunning survive? Or we keep our original identity of purity and goodness at heart in our daily lives. The three literary texts we read all address this dilemma in different ways. And as in all good stories, good prevails over evil. The first play we'll talk about was my favorite. It is called The Good Woman of Setzuan written by the German author Brecht. This story is about a woman who was too kind for her own good. His name is Shen Te. At the beginning of the story she is a prostitute but by the end she becomes the owner of a successful tobacco shop, girlfriend and future mother. Shen Te also creates another character that shows her deceitful and greedy side, or the side of her that could survive in her society, Shui Ta. He is a brash and brutal young man who wards off freeloaders.1 Yang Sun is an unemployed aviator whom Shen Te saves from suicide. He is a big monster who later admits that he has no intention of marrying her and that he wants Shen Te's money. The story begins when three gods come to earth in search of a good human. If they didn't discover at least one, the world would cease to exist. After traveling from city to city they arrive in Setzuan. No one in the city would let them spend the night except Shen Te, who was the town prostitute at the time. The gods realize they have found their only good human and repay his kindness and hospitality with a large sum of money. After the departure of the gods, all the citizens flock to Shen Te in the hope of receiving some of his money. This is when she is forced to disguise herself as Shui Ta, her crude male cousin. Then he falls in love with Yang Sun whom he saves from suicide. After they plan to get married, Yang admits to Shui Ta that she wants Shen Te's money and has no plans to get married..
