Shashi Deshpande emerged on the Indian fiction scene in the 1970s. She has carved a niche for herself in the galaxy of Indian women writers in English. This article titled “Gender Role Reduction…” seeks to explore issues such as gender discrimination and social conditioning of girls. The woman must conform to the norms in a patriarchal family setup. But when he refuses to be, he faces discomfort in relationships. Saru and Jaya reflect an emotional fracture of women due to gender discrimination and the male dominant social setup in the family. Women lose their rights, identity and sustainability, which culminates in the symbolic reduction of their gender balance. INTRODUCTION: Shashi Deshpande, a noted writer of contemporary India, was born in Karnataka and educated in Bombay and Banglore. He won the Sahitya Academy Award for the novel That Long Silence in 1990. Shashi Deshpande has received much attention from critics, scholars and the media. It focuses on the difficult situation of women's social conditioning. By projecting the woman as the protagonist, Deshpande tries to reveal the problems of the woman namely gender discrimination, lack of identity, fruitless rebellion against the subordinate position in the family and finally her helpless submission before the male dominator.
