Youth Suicide is one of the main causes of youth death. In fact, statistics show that approximately 4600 teenagers commit suicide every year in the United States (2013). One of the main reasons why teenagers commit suicide is due to the fact that others have a huge negative impact on the teenager's life. To prevent fewer deaths, one should learn that everything has consequences, so one should consider how these affect others through actions and words. This is one of the central themes that Jay Asher shows in his book Thirteen Reasons Why. Demonstrate the message by creating ribbons to represent the theme of the book. Asher also demonstrates this by developing two strong main characters, Hannah Baker and Clay Jensen. First of all, the most important symbol is the ribbons, around which the story revolves. First, they help develop the theme as they symbolize the theme itself within the novel. They develop the theme because their aim was to tell 13 different reasons why Hannah killed herself; which is basically how 13 different people influenced his life. For example, in cassette 1:side 8 he tells the story of how Alex Standoll made a difference in his life. He created the “hot/disfavorite list” as a joke without knowing how it would affect Hannah’s life. She considered it a joke, but it led to multiple life-changing outcomes for Hannah, such as creating conflict with Jessica. This shows the theme because it is another example of not considering the consequences of your actions. Alex didn't seem to think about how stupid living could create so much conflict, but it did. As a result, the list had many negative effects on Hannah, even though it was portrayed as a joke. Another way Asher establishes the theme is by creating an effect towards the 13 who were on the tapes. In Clay's case, the next morning was terrible. All he could think about were the
