England, one of the most powerful nations in the world, especially in the 1500s, was profoundly changed during the reign of King Henry VIII. Although his reign lasted forty years, it is still one of the best known and best remembered reigns today. Henry was the second monarch of the famous Tudor dynasty. This king is best known for his important role in the separation between the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England, as well as for his numerous wives throughout his reign. Over the course of his life, King Henry VIII obtained six different wives and had seven named children in total [although most of them died shortly after birth]. He divorced two of his wives, two were beheaded, one died, and one survived due to Henry's death. However, Henry's first two wives had the greatest impression on the direction of English rule. These two wives, Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, had an influential impact on his many decisions during his reign on the English throne. After the death of his older brother Arthur in 1502, he ascended the English throne in April 1509” (Richardson 6). Henry was quite vain, but he was a king after all. He dedicated himself to hunting and sports but was also intelligent academically, spoke various languages and followed artistic and theological debate. As William Shakespeare said in the famous play King Henry VIII, this king was "more interested in arms and armor, swordsmanship, jousting, hunting, and women than in kingship" (Jokinen 1). Henry came to power during a time of peace among the surrounding nations. His father ruled justly and was rewarded with a peaceful period after the Wars of the Roses.
