NT Wright's book, The Jesus Challenge, challenges the reader in various aspects of their life; including faith, understanding and inspiration. The reader is able to see Jesus in a different context. In this view, Wright presents almost a time travel experience to understand their world and the historical context of Jesus' time. When understanding Wright's purpose and argument in this book, the reader can assume that the thesis is essentially the title. Jesus presents his followers with a challenge, which is best understood in the essence of who Jesus is, not just who we understand him to be. In the preface of Wright's book he states three specific purposes, including "historical integrity in speaking about Jesus, Christian discipleship that professes to follow Jesus, and providing Christians with a vision that will transform the world" (Wright 10-11). . I believe Wright's purpose in writing this book was to empower Christians to impact the world with love and live the gospel in our everyday lives. NT Wright focuses heavily on the story of Jesus and the time period in which he lived. This essentially helps the reader see Jesus as a human being, a child, a man, and one of us. It is easier to relate to a man who has experienced life than to a higher being with whom we have no relationship. Wright focuses on the Jewish mentality and sets the tone of the book in the first chapter. He states that “the living God will defeat evil once and for all and create a new world of justice and peace” (Wright 22). This forms a theme of redemption throughout the book. There are multiple allegories that can be found in this particular book as well as in the Bible. It seems Wright uses the medium of paper and every Christian to live out the message of Jesus Christ in our daily lives. In conclusion, I think Wright has done an adequate job of supporting his thesis. In some chapters I feel like it was more in-depth than others, but overall it demonstrated its purpose, which was to understand who Jesus was in light of the time period he lived in, what it means to follow Jesus, and live the gospel in our daily lives. It has provided the reader with applications and challenges in light of our faith foundations. Overall I think Wright did a sufficient job of making his case. The book was quite a challenge for many believers, I think it would be a difficult book for those who are not very strong in their faith due to the strong accusations of whether or not they believe in the resurrection as it is the foundation of all Christianity.
