The main weakness of this method is also its strength, it focuses on the couple. While this method may help some couples make their ideas known, it can cause other couples to remain silent. Specifically, if a relationship has someone who doesn't want to be in therapy, they may not be willing to engage in dialogue because they won't see the benefits. Therefore, because the therapist primarily tries to stay out of the conversation, the client may not be moved to speak. Additionally, they may feel like there is no benefit from therapy because they have to solve their own problems. This may discourage them from returning to therapy and may lead to further arguments. Another weakness of this method is that it requires committed people who are able to empathize with their partner. This method requires the couple to be able to understand what their partner is saying. For those who are unable to see things from another's point of view this would be a challenging task. Additionally, the therapist using this method will focus on whether the partners understand what their significant other was saying, they will not analyze the conversation themselves. Therefore, if no one analyzes what the speaker says, he or she may feel defeated and no longer try to describe it
