Existentialism in Franz Kafka's MetamorphosesIn Franz Kafka's story, Metamorphoses, the idea of existentialism is expressed in a subtle but definite way. Existentialism is defined as a belief that an individual is ultimately responsible for giving meaning to their life and that life alone is meaningless. They do not believe in any kind of supreme power and focus much of their attention on concepts such as fear, boredom, freedom and nothingness. This philosophical literary movement emerged in the 20th century, when Kafka was defining his writing style regarding alienation and distorted anxiety. Mirroring his personal lifestyle, this story follows the short and sad life of a man unable to free himself from the bonds that society has imposed on him. These bonds are not only evident in the workplace, but also at home. Being constantly used and abused while in his human form, Gregor's lifestyle becomes complicated once he becomes a giant insect and is deemed useless. Conflicts and confusion arise especially between Gregor and his sister Grete, his parents and his work. Each of these three relationships has different moral and ethical complications that define them. However, it is important to keep in mind that Gregor's metamorphosis has placed him in a position of opposition and that he has minimal control over the events that will take place. Conflict will also occur between family members as they struggle with the decision of what to do with Gregor. Eventually they all come to the agreement that maintaining its uselessness is slowly draining them and they need to get rid of it. Grete is a character who seems to have the greatest tolerance for Gregor immediately after his metamorphosis. Gregor was apparently quite fond of his sister and hoped to finance her conservatory education. He was also quite mesmerized by her violin playing. Her failure to carry out these planned acts of kindness may have led to a more rapid deterioration of Grete's maintenance of Gregor's room. Although she never managed to get used to Gregor's new bizarre appearance, she was the only one who supported him throughout his life after the metamorphosis: “It would not have surprised Gregor if she had not entered, for in her position... she jumped back and closed the door; a stranger could easily have thought that Gregor was waiting for her and wanted to bite her.” (28)
