America's Values In a country as culturally and ethnically diverse as the United States of America, it can be difficult to believe that so many people from such diverse backgrounds can share the same basic set of values. Even if you were to ask any number of Americans at random, they would receive different answers about what their values are. Some may not be able to give a definitive answer. Others might continuously list the values without stopping. While it may seem like there is a wide range of values, looking closer you will find that these ideas can be condensed into four main categories. These extremely important American values are individualism, equality, competition, and progress. By far the most important ideal that Americans hold is their idea of individualism. The belief that each person is unique and responsible for their own life is instilled in every person from childhood. Rather than seeing themselves as members of a group, Americans believe that everyone is different; therefore, this leads them to believe that society has no influence on the values they themselves uphold. This is one reason why it is difficult to ask an American what America's values are. Along with the concept that each individual is in control of their own being, instead of viewing the rich as lucky and the poor as unlucky, they are viewed as hardworking and lazy. Since each individual is responsible for his own life, where it ends up depends on him. Finally, with individuality comes the value placed on privacy. Americans expect everyone to need time alone in their daily lives to restore their energy. If someone says they need time alone, the sentiment is understood and respected. Closely associated with... medium of paper... the future. With their hard-working attitude, positive outlook for the future, and vision for change, America has become the home of progress. This valor led America to accomplishments, such as the moon landing, that others thought were impossible. While America is rich in diversity, its culture was founded around the values of individualism, equality, competition, and progress. Each of these values is closely related to one another, while containing within it many smaller ideals. Although Americans believe that each individual is a unique person, there is no denying that these values have been strongly ingrained in American society. Throughout its history, a multitude of American actions have been aimed at protecting these values, whether they realize it or not. If you look carefully, it is obvious that these four values have truly become an intangible core element in American society.
