Hamlet Out Of Class EssayAnalysis of MortalityIn his tragedy Hamlet, William Shakespeare explores and analyzes the concept of mortality and the inevitability of death through the development of the understanding and ideology of Hamlet about the purpose for living. Through Hamlet's obsessive fascination with understanding the purpose of life and whether death is the answer, Shakespeare analyzes and interprets the meaning of the different elements of mortality and death: the pain that death causes others, the fading of the trials of existence through death and the reason to live. While due to the inevitable and unsolvable mystery of the uncertainty of death, since no being can ever empirically experience death and be able to narrate it, Shakespeare offers an answer to the reason for living through an analysis of Hamlet's development in understanding death.Shakespeare shows the ideology of death internalized in Hamlet first with Hamlet's emotions after Old Hamlet's death. In the scene in which Hamlet is introduced, Hamlet is portrayed as the embodiment of death, dressed in “garments of solemn black” (1.2.81) and has a “dejected bearing of countenance” (1.2.84). Hamlet's physical representation as death indicates his lack of desire to continue living himself, being detached and discontent with the world around him. Hamlet, in his first soliloquy, opens by stating: "The stained flesh would melt / Melt and resolve to dew, / Or that the LORD had not set / His canon 'against self-killing!" (1.2. 133-135) . This is significant, as it shows Hamlet's full willingness to commit suicide and to end Hamlet's internal pain, except that suicide is a sin according to religion. Hamlet states when reflecting on the murders of Rosencrantz and Gildenstern: “Their defeat / Grows by their own insinuation” (5.2.65-66).
