The Irish Republican Army was a known terrorist organization originating from Dublin, Ireland. The Irish Volunteers started the Easter Rising to end British rule in Ireland, leading them to be titled as the Irish Republican Army in January 1919. In 1919, the Irish Volunteers they were confirmed by the Irish nationalists, Dail Eireann and were recognized as a legitimate army. The IRA waged guerrilla warfare against the British from 1919 to 1921, creating the Irish War of Independence. The IRA was active from January 1919 to March 1922, although it is now inactive. The main leader of the IRA was the IRA Army Council. Their headquarters were in Dublin, Ireland, but they also operate in the UK, All Ireland and Northern Ireland. The IRA was financed by extortion, bank robberies and donations from their descendants. The main objective of the Irish Republican Army was to become independent from Great Britain. The Irish Republican Army began after being recognized by the Irish Nationalists when they were Irish Volunteers from the start of the Easter Rising.
