Social control theory is based on the rationale that individuals naturally commit crimes if left alone. In other words, we are all born with some criminal characteristics. We learn social norms as we grow up. Recent research has suggested that obedience and self-control at an early age are important before their personality deviates. Policies based on control theories have been implemented to control crime and delinquency (Bernard et al., 2010, p. 219).
