(Page 5)Writing: Tita is the main character of the story, also the narrator, who suffers the injustice oppression from mother Elena, his mother. She is raised to excel in cooking and many entertainment arts where she is expected to spend her entire life taking care of her mother. This follows the family tradition that the youngest daughter takes care of her mother until her death. With her frivolous desires, mother Elena denies her marriage and happiness to any man, especially to Pedro. She finally collapses and meets John Brown, the family doctor, who heals her until she finds happiness again after the death of her mother Elena with Pedro. Overall, Tita goes through a very dynamic change in the story which obviously gives her the right to be a main character.2. Mamma ElenaQuote: "In addition to insisting that Tita taste the food in front of her, she [Mama Elena] always had a glass of warm milk... to counteract the effects of the bitter poison that she believed was dissolved in the food." Any child of his is deemed unworthy when they do something that goes against his "rules". He takes it to the extreme where rules are imposed on his more "public family", including John Brown and Pedro. His stern stature is noted when his daunting gaze makes the revolutionary general Juan Trevino uncomfortable. Ultimately, his pride and distrust are revealed to be his major flaw that causes his death. GertrudisQuote: "She [Gertrudis] had returned with the intention of showing mother Elena how she had triumphed in life. He was a general of the revolutionary army... Leadership was in his blood..." (Page 178 - 179 ) : Like all of mother Elena's daughters, Gertrudis despised her very oppressive mother. She escapes her mother by running away with a rebel soldier, Juan Trevino, due to a reaction to Tita's recipe for quail in rose petal sauce.
