In Mark Twain's essay The Damned Human Race, he states that it "forces [him] to renounce [his] allegiance to the Darwinian theory of the ascent of man from below Animals; for it now seems clear to him that the theory should be vacated in favor of a new and truer one, this new and truer one to be called the Descent of Man from the Higher Animals” (Zengardner.com). However, this new theory would no longer be true, it would not be true at all. Man does not descend from animals, he is not damned and he is certainly not incorrigible. Instead, we are rightfully in our place above other animals and are completely redeemable. Twain first points out that human beings are waste. He demonstrates this through the story of an English earl who wanted to go hunting to get food to store. He and his hunters set off and had a great time. That day, the men killed seventy-two buffalo but ate only part of them and left the other seventy-one intact. Of course, this is a great story to use to support your point. However, one could also point out the lifestyle of Native Americans who would find such behavior repugnant. Thomas E. Mails has studied Native Americans for many years. In his book The Mystic Warrior, Mails states that "the habits and species of the buffalo were intensively studied, and in time the Indians put practically every part of the beast to utilitarian use" (Mail 188). It goes on to show a visual assistant that labels each part of the buffalo and lists the many ways each part was used. For example, buckskin alone was used for moccasins, cradles, clothing, tipi covers, quivers, gun cases, and many other items needed by the Indians for dai...... middle of paper......
