The Imperfect Creator in Frankenstein Often the actions of children reflect the attitudes of those who raised them. In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, Doctor Victor Frankenstein is the only being who can take responsibility for the creature he created, as he is the only one who played a role in bringing it into existence. Although Creation's actions are illegal and deadly ones, their roots are traced back to Frankenstein's flaws as a creator. Many of Frankenstein's flaws are evident in the appearance of his creation. He is described as having yellow skin, dark black hair, sunken eyes, and black lips (Shelly 56). Frankenstein, having chosen the parts for his creature, is the only one possible to blame for his appearance. Martin Tropp states that the monster is "designed to be beautiful and loving, it is repulsive and unloved" (64). Clearly it is Frankenstein's lack of foresight in the creation process that allows a creature whose features Frankenstein "had selected as beautiful" (56) to become something that the mere sight of causes its creator to say "horror and disgust breathlessly they filled my heart" (56). He overlooks the seemingly obvious fact that ugliness is the natural result when something is made from different corpse parts and put together. If he had thought more clearly he would have noticed the horror of the monster. Another physical aspect of the monster that shows a flaw in Frankenstein is its immense size. The reason Frankenstein gives for creating such a large creature is his haste. He states that "Since the minuteness of the parts constituted a great obstacle to my speed, I decided, contrary to my first intention, to create a being of gigantic stature..." (52). If Frankenstein hadn't been so hasty in completing his project, he wouldn't have had to deal with such a physically intimidating creature. Tropp however says that ambition may have played a role in the dimension of creation. He says that creation was "born of Frankenstein's megalomania" (81). This may actually be true as the inventor states: "A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their existence to me"" (52).
