Topic > Excavations in the Cotswolds - 1545

The Cotswolds are located in south-west England, mainly in Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire and extend into Wiltshire, Worcestershire and south-east Warwickshire (Wikipedia,2013). It is said to be a "wonderful place to visit" (escapetothecotswolds.org.uk, 2013) and "one of the most 'quintessentially English'" (cotswolds.info, 2013), so it is a popular travel destination for tourists. The main feature of the Cotswolds is the "rolling hills ('wolds'), sleepy villages" (the-cotswolds.org, 2013) and the area which is 25 miles (40 km) wide and 90 miles (145 km) long (Wikipedia, 2013), almost as big as the greater Tokyo (the-cotswolds.org, 2013). Even the name itself carries the typical landscape we know today, because the word "cotswolds" is made up of two names: "cots" - a term for sheep pens, used by many people and "wolds" - rolling hills. “cotswolds” is thought to mean rolling hills inhabited by sheep (cotswolds.com, 2013). But the beautiful landscape is not the only thing that attracts people's eyes. The history of the Cotswolds is quite impressive, dating back not only to the Iron Age but also to the Neolithic around 3500 BC, when the first visitors arrived. Since then many great monuments have been left behind, such as barrows and cemeteries scattered throughout the Cotswolds area (thecotswoldgateway.co.uk, 2010). In AD 43 the Roman legions arrived (thecotswoldgateway.co.uk, 2010) and not long after the invasion huge changes were made to the way houses were built in southern Britain. In the following two decades most houses were "rectangular, had several rooms, often tiled roofs, and were usually built at least with stone foundations and plinths" (Guy de la Bédoyère, year...... half of document ......ogical Survey Manual”.
