The novel, Lord of the Flies, deals a lot with characterization. The character that stood out the most was Ralph, who was excellently developed by Golding as a leader. When Ralph is first introduced to the reader, one can see his sense of observation even in the first sentence where he says, "That's an island, at least I think it's an island. That's a coral reef in the sea. Maybe there are no adults anywhere. As everyone knows, a good sense of observation is essential for a leader. He was chosen as a leader by the other boys, which shows the civilized instinct with humans discipline in this chaotic world without adults, as demonstrated by his character and his composure during the first meeting Almost defines himself with his first speech: "Listen, everyone. I need to have time to think about things. I can't decide what to do right away. If this is not an island, we could be saved right away. So we have to decide whether this is an island or not. Everyone must stay here and wait and not go away. If we took more, we would all get confused and lose each other of us will go on an expedition and find out. I'll go, and Jack, and, and..." (p.23-24) Ralph wastes no time in bringing order to the group. He demonstrates intelligence and self-control by not jumping to conclusions and wanting "time to think things through." This shows to the reader who is cautious. Surely the other boys recognized him, because he had earned the title of leader. Ralph clearly demonstrates the need for civility with the tasks he orders to be done. The first task he asks is to light a fire He thought lighting a fire would helped a passing ship locate them. You can understand this and know that, unlike the other boys who are preoccupied with hunting, swimming, playing on the beach, and other mundane forms of entertainment, Ralph is intent on being saved Whatever he wants it's for them to live on the island safely, as demonstrated by the shelters, or for them to be rescued During the chapter 5 assembly, Ralph tells the group about his frustration that things aren't getting done. From the way the other boys act, he suggests that he is the only one who wants to be saved.
