According to the Death Penalty Information Center, 'they have not been able to say how many of the 1,000 people executed since 1976 were possibly innocent. Defense lawyers have already moved on to a new case, where a client's life can still be saved.' An example is the story of Todd Willingham. In 1992 he was accused of setting fire to his home, killing all three of his children. The court had thought he killed them on purpose, unfortunately he was sentenced to death. After a few years, the court found that the evidence gathered against him was false. The fire was accidental and the man was found innocent. Unfortunately it was too late to bring him back to life.
