The Holocaust is known to all of us in some way. Maybe we know someone who survived this terrible historical event, or someone learned about it in school, either way, everyone had some sort of knowledge about the horrible things the Nazi Party did to European Jews during the Holocaust. a great tribute to many lives in one way or another, one in particular being VladekSpiegleman. Vladek's personality underwent a huge change due to his experiences during World War II. His personality is so dynamic and it was his experiences during the Holocaust that changed him so dramatically. At the beginning of Maus the reader is thrown into a scenario where the author, Art, visits his father many times. Art and his father, Vladek, begin a conversation about Vladek's past, but Vladek is very reluctant to discuss his past with anyone. Vladek appears to be a very distrustful old man who is afraid of two important things. Vladek's main fear is to record his memories only to relive the pain he suffered and because of this Vladek is afraid of getting too close to anyone. He thinks that he will be betrayed, as before, by many Germans and even by his own friends. The way he is so cold towards his second wife also shows how unloving Vladek is to anyone who hasn't gone through the exact same experiences as him. Even with his son, Vladek has difficulty opening up about personal memories and being loving and caring. All these bitter emotions that prevent Vladek from being happy in his old age are caused by the painful memories of the Holocaust. Vladek's experiences during the war have caused drama... middle of paper... he is especially incapable of trusting people who don't live the same life as him, like his son. He has a very cold heart and is sometimes even insensitive to art. All this is caused by Vladek's inability to deal with the pain he has suffered all his life, i.e. the war, the holocaust, his wife's suicide and his heart disease. Vladek has a very complex personality that evolved greatly thanks to the experiences he went through during the Holocaust. The Holocaust thought he was unwilling to save anything (material things as well as his emotions) and made him almost obsessive compulsive in wasting food or money. He has a deep fear that everyone wants to take advantage of him, use him and then betray him. Ladek Spiegleman is a disturbed and embittered old man who is unwilling to talk about the things that made him the way he is..
