Lord of the Flies by William Golding Theme: Most people perceive children as innocent and precious beings. Some believe they are angelic. Put in the wrong situations, however, they can become ferocious beasts. Innocence leaves their bodies and they are no longer precious. Survival of the fittest instinct takes over and they can become killers. In the book Lord of the Flies the theme is that children are not as innocent as they seem. At the beginning of the book the boys seem to have peace and order. They help each other. They elect Ralph as their leader. They follow his orders when they need to work together. The shell is used to restore order within the group of boys. Soon these practices die out and kids start to change. Jack and his group of hunters begin to develop a passion for killing pigs. Jack and the hunters also lose all respect for Ralph and the conch. They found their own tribe, whose soul purpose is to hunt and hold rituals. Killing pigs starts to bore them, so they start looking for other things to kill. The hunters begin to force people to join the tribe through threats. Then the threats lead to the killing of two boys. The hunters first kill Simon, who they think is a beast. They then kill Piggy by rolling a stone at him. With the two murders behind them, they soon began chasing Ralph. They chase him across the island but he is soon rescued. The naval officer witnesses how the children have transformed from well-behaved boys into wild beasts. Although children are not as innocent as they seem, they still hold a close place in their parents' hearts. They are also human, just like everyone else. They know the difference between black and white, right and wrong. Survival of the fittest instinct is something that every creature on this planet possesses. The weak are always free. The book shows this well. Important Passages: "Ralph sat on a fallen log, his left side facing the sun. To his right were most of the choir; to his left the older boys who had never met before... first him small children were crouched in the grass.
