The painting An old man and his grandson by Domenico Ghirlandaio An old man and his grandson has a very intimate presence. Looking at the angelic child, I wonder, what is he thinking? Maybe he's remembering the beauty of being a child. Innocence and cleanliness. The boy he once was. Looking at the Old Man's face, I immediately thought it was safe to say that he had a case of rhinophyma, which is an enlargement of the nose due to dilation of the skin follicles, suggesting years of excessive alcohol consumption. But now it was suggested to me that the old man had a bad case of rosacea. My online research led me to say it's a gamble compared to what I had to agree on. To me, this painting shows a contrast between perfection and imperfection. It is a naturalistic portrait, depicting a deep sense of emotion. The realism in the old man's face captures our concern in trying to understand what is happening in the painting. I feel that the realism in the Old Man's face conveys the deep emotions he feels towards the child. There is a great contrast between him and the child. The child appears to be represented as an almost angelic figure, a more idealized Renaissance creation. While the old man has a worn face, which suggests a long life. The man is wearing a reddish robe which suggests he may be some sort of noble figure. Ghirlandaio's horizontal placement of the old man and child certainly contributed to an exaggerated existence of an emotional moment between the two. I also considered taking the child's perspective, looking at the old man's bulbous nose, wrinkled face, and large ears. Looking at the background, I see some things that I would like to describe what they might mean, or at least mean to myself. The tree closest to the characters doesn't appear to have many leaves on it. Further in the distance we see trees appear
