Topic > Jazz during the Roaring Twenties - 648

The Roaring Twenties were a time of prosperity, happiness, vibrancy and new ways. One of the many new ideas introduced was jazz music. Jazz fits perfectly into the atmosphere, with its cheerful and exciting sounds. Even though jazz seemed to be a new worldwide obsession, there were people who saw it in a different, much darker, perhaps even evil light. These people had negative opinions about music and saw it as "causing moral slackness and fearful dislocation." Different generations had completely different opinions about rapid change and both opinions were equally correct, but only one was logical. Music brought change, freedom, and united black America with white America. Jazz was positive music, with uplifting sounds and relatable lyrics. People who listened to it could identify with the words sung and felt happier afterwards. The other side of the debate, however, felt as if the music was ushering in a new era, one that they weren't comfortable with. Understandably, because change is never easy. This group of people were "fearful of such rapid change and were nostalgic for the small-town America" they had once known. They had become accustomed to quiet, conservative times, which were now changing due to the "noise" we call jazz. There are enough reasons to not want to change, but having such a negative outlook on a new life is never the answer. Change is inevitable, so it was expected. With a new generation will always come something new, new music, new trends, anything new. For people who loved jazz, this change brought an abundance of positivity. They could joyfully listen to the music that would define the generation. Millions of teenagers in America we...... middle of paper ...... came from the popularity of jazz was positive. Although some people were not happy about it, it improved the lives of so many people in such drastic ways that it cannot be seen as "evil" music. With each new age group will come change, and people before will not be so accepting. If you look at a timeline of, say, music, you'll notice that as time has passed, music has become more sexual, more extroverted, more "evil," louder, even sillier. Every generation needs something that distinguishes it and that enhances the previous one. It is a natural lifestyle, proven by history. Jazz also helped many people in the years to come, the depression years, by lifting their spirits. The pros of jazz music definitely outweigh the cons, which makes it clear that the negative aspects of the music are only based on opinions, while the positive ones are based on facts..
