After Bibikov's death, Bok hallucinates during a conversation with his old friend. In this hallucination Bibikov tells Bok that "the purpose of freedom is to create it for others" (336). This event illustrates once again that Bok's hallucinations are important for the discovery of inner freedom. This statement is particularly dear to Bok because it comes, even if in a dream, from someone he trusted and believed in. Bok now realizes that the important issue is not his freedom. What really matters is the freedom of those who come after him. Realizing that his freedom isn't important strangely gives Bok a greater sense of freedom. Now he knows what the purpose of his life must be: Bok must be a martyr for his people, the very people he had tried to kill.
