In “1991” (Gipps et al., 1995, p.2) assessments for pupils at level 1 were introduced to assess pupils' knowledge at “5-7” years (Gipps et al. al., 1995, p.3) whereby various activities such as reading were carried out throughout the class to improve pupils' cognitive development. These assessments were known as “standardized assessment tests” (Gipps et al., 1995, p.51) which help to identify whether pupils have made progress in subjects such as mathematics, English and science. Gipps et al., (1995) argue that the ability to assess pupils as learners has changed the way teaching professionals teach pupils by observing pupils and being able to understand their strengths and weaknesses , teaching professionals can create appropriate activities that will help pupils improve. cognitive development, but teaching professionals also gain a better understanding of how to support pupils in learning from changes to the national system
