The Revolutionary War is also known as the American Revolution and the United States Revolutionary War. The war was between Great Britain and the 13 American colonies. When the English and the colonists fought together in the Seven Years' War against the French, they were deeply in debt. Because of the debt the English began taxing the colonists to get out of the debt. After coming under British control, citizens of the 13 American colonies became frustrated with the taxes imposed by Great Britain and thought it was unfair for them to have to pay taxes on products they produced, such as tea and stamps. That was just the beginning of the settler's problems. After the original taxation in 1764, the British passed the Quartering Act which forced colonists to host British troops in the northern part of what would be America. This outraged the colonists even more. Then they passed the Townshend Acts imposing taxes on imports into the United States and then the Coercive Acts after the Boston tea party, which infuriated the English. With the absence of representation in the British Parliament capable of taxing the colonists, from which the principle of “no taxation without representation” derives, they had had enough. Troops from England began arriving in America to enforce the taxes more and the colonists took great offense in their physical enforcement. The colonists began to oppose the British government and were known as patriots, fighting for their freedom from Great Britain. The colonists wanted their own country at this point and that's when they decided to fight for it. It all began on April 19, 1775 in Lexington, Massachusetts, where the first battle took place.
