The era of stagnation was a period in which economic and political development went no further. The period began in 1964 during the government of Leonid Brezhnev and ended with Mikhail Gorbachev's policies of glasnost and perestroika, which led to the 1989 Revolution and ultimately the collapse of the Soviet Union. The time period can be described as a waste. The very term “Era of Stagnation” arose when Mikhail Gorbachev blamed Leonid Brezhnev for the economic problems that emerged in 1964. The main reason for the stagnation was increased expenses. Spending initially increased on military consumer goods and slowly shifted to economic issues such as labor inefficiency. However, author of: “Revolution from Above: The End of the Soviet System” David Michael Kotz argues that militarization could not cause significant changes within the Soviet economy as military spending was historically high.
