Topic > How Service Dogs Help Their Owners - 721

Dogs are incredible animals. They are hunters, gatherers, rescuers, herders and even healers. Dogs have amazing senses of smell, sight and hearing. This helps them become great hunters, retrievers, rescuers, herders and healers. They can smell game for shooting. They can smell people trapped in an avalanche. Also, smell the sheep that have lost their way out of the flock. You can also smell a difference in its owner before he has a seizure. Dogs' senses can help them detect all kinds of diseases in humans. Cancer, seizures and hypoglycemia are just some of the diseases they can detect. These brilliant animals could help many people who are unaware that they are sick or trapped by their illnesses. With no way of knowing when their illness will return; people hide at home for fear of being hurt or embarrassed. Dogs can help these people by detecting seizures, tumors or drops in blood sugar. Service dogs can also help those with physical disabilities. They can retrieve keys, turn on lights, open doors. Dogs help those suffering from anxiety disorders. Dogs significantly reduce anxiety due to their unconditional love and companionship. They can remind owners to take medications. Distract and redirect the owner from harmful or compulsive behaviors. Unfortunately, most of those who need these animals are not aware of the dogs' capabilities. Awareness should be raised for those who need assistance like me. I have a seizure disorder and was unaware of the abilities of dogs until I purchased my Shar Pei, Copper. He didn't even need to be taught to detect my seizures, he just knew. After the first one, we always knew when Copper was going to scratch my feet and complain that I was going to have a seizure. Dogs are brilliant in this regard. So, why is it so bad… half of the paper… the researchers hypothesized that this reduction may be due to changes in owners' perceptions of self-control and self-efficacy." (Wells, 2012) Dogs can alert those who have a seizure to get to safety. They would be able to move away from objects that could hurt them and away from the public eye. They could avoid getting into the ambulance if the seizure is not serious. So tell me it's not embarrassing save so many people from this kind of situation. Simply by using the amazing senses they are born with. They could help people regain their freedom. They could also help create a new machine that can detect when someone will have an episode even lead to cures. We could find cures for hypoglycemia, epilepsy, and even cancer. I don't know about everyone else, but that sounds pretty good to me. Dogs can help heal.
