Topic > Anything Men Can Do, Women Can Do Better - 1246

When Annie sings "anything you can do, I can do better", men took this idea and ran with it. This is a world where women cannot outshine men; at least that's the stereotype. Although women can outshine men, it is a typical example that men should not allow this to happen. This gender gap occurs because our society allows it. No matter what problems are solved, there are always stereotypes and problems that still need to be solved. The idea that men don't let women outshine them still exists today. Men should be seen as the best. However, it can be argued that women are starting to feel the same. A classification that was once given to men may slowly become something that can be seen in women. In fact, Annie was talking about herself, about a woman. Some stereotypes are created for cruel reasons. While that may have been true in the past, men not allowing women to outshine them is not one of them. There was a time when women couldn't be better than men because society put women below men. Men were supposed to earn their bread and be able to support their wives. If a woman earned more money than a man, that man's status would decrease. Times have changed drastically and today there are women who earn more money than men. Although it can be argued that men and women are not at the same level, the gap between them has narrowed. Men don't want women to outshine them for reasons other than being cruel. There are exceptions in every case, but in most cases it is done without thinking that it will hurt a woman. A man's ego and impressing friends are key factors why men seek to be superior. Saying that men don't let women outdo them for their self-image may seem silly... ....genders can act like they know what's going on when they really don't. Both genders can do better what the other gender should do. Stereotypes may never go away, but when essays like Fallows and Chabon talk about them, we can open our eyes to different ideas. It can show that men still try to be the best at something. They don't want women to outshine them. The stereotype of men outshining women is clearer than the stereotype of a woman outshining a man, but both exist in their own way. Time has changed the gender gap and will continue to change the stereotypes associated with each gender. Works Cited Chabon, Michael. "Pretending." The presence of writers. 7th ed.
