Stream of consciousness is when writing is written to imitate the thoughts, feelings, and reactions of characters in a continuous flow. This can be seen in the short and long sentences of the passage, such as the rhetorical questions Milkman asks himself. He asks himself questions like "So?" to “Standing?” and even to “And how did I forget?”. These show the thought process Milkman took to remember how he got his name. The rhetorical questions show how Milkman is dealing with the new information he has about his mother. It is this stream of consciousness that helps the reader understand who Milkman is by following his chain
