"Alcohol and substance use are among the most common reasons given for a divorce: the third most common reason for women and l 'eighth most common for men' (RIA Reaching Others). It is proven that in couples where one of the partners abuses drugs, the relationship is not happy. Drug use and abuse creates an emotional barrier between partners that is not easy to overcome. The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy explains that these couples constantly argue and argue, and sometimes the situation becomes violent. “Often it is precisely the argument that can create an environment or situation in which the partner with alcohol or drug problems uses these substances to reduce their stress” (Fals-Stewart). Sexual dysfunction is also a side effect if an individual abuses drugs and alcohol. The individual experiences problems with their partner while trying to achieve physical intimacy. Research also shows that a sober partner in marriage can help hide a partner's abuse problems so other friends and family don't find out; and they also hide each other's drug abuse from their children, which can cause harm to the child if they end up finding out
