The Lord of the Flies"This is an island. At least I think it is an island. It's a coral reef in the sea. Maybe there are no adults anywhere."The Lord of the Flies Flies Flies is about a plain full of British kids who get stranded on an island. They start out peaceful and orderly and eventually descend into savagery. Is this book just about kids stranded on an island or is it about something more? Then a beast appears in the book, things go from bad to worse, and the boy descends further into savagery. While traveling to a boys' school during World War II, the boy's plane crashes on an uninhabited tropical island. The boys end up alone on the island without any adults. Ralph and Piggy, two of the main characters, discover how to use a shell they find on the beach as a horn to call the first meeting on the island. This shell ends up being the symbol of order and civilization, and is also used to call meetings and holding it would give the boy holding it the right to speak. They all decide they would be civil and make rules, keep a signal fire burning, and have a leader who will call meetings and lead the group of kids. Ralph and Jack, another main character in the book and the leader of the choir group, participate in the election to see who will become leader and Ralph wins. This shocks Jack, but he agrees to have his choir hold the fire signal, using Piggy Glasses to start the fire. To make sure they were on an island, Ralph and Jack go on an expedition. During their expedition they discover not only that they are actually on an island, but that there are also pigs on the island. At one end of the island there is a large rock/mountain that they decide to keep the signal fire on. Jack then finds his new hobby: hunting pigs. All is well until they see a ship in the distance and notice that the signal fire is out. Jack had taken the entire choir member, now known as the hunters, on a pig hunt, and they had been successful. But in the excitement of finally killing a pig, they let the signal sound just as a ship passed.
